Masculinity & Femininity

NB! Masculine ≠ Male, Feminine ≠ Female.

Regardless of sex or gender, we all contain both masculine and feminine energy.

The levels of these complimentary energies may be very close, but typically, one of the two energies will be more dominant.

We refer to this dominant energy as the leading or native energy.

Our leading energy reflects our inner nature, revealing:

  • our temperaments and proclivities
  • deeply help values

It’s possible for our leading energy to make changes during our lifetime in response to significant experiences, however it’s not something which changes lightly.

Understanding your leading energy, or native energy, is necessary to:

  • better understand yourself
  • make choices more aligned with your nature

Work with yourself, not against yourself.

Let’s take a deeper look.

A Brief History

Where did “masculine” and “feminine” energy even come from?

This type of language has been around for a looong time.

Many world languages have masculine and feminine properties built-in.

Negative Attitudes

Modern culture has visibly and destructively expressed angst towards masculinity and femininity, and against life-roles such as “wife” and “patriarch”.

“Toxic masculinity”. “Toxic femininity”.

“Get back in the kitchen.”

“Get f*cked.”

“You’re a p*ssy.”

“You’re a d*ck head.”

It is a woe and shame for anyone who considers one aspect to be stronger/better or weaker/lesser than the other. The truth of the matter is that each aspect – masculine or feminine – is deeply valuable, in and of itself, contributing to the world in its unique way.

Different challenges require different values and skill sets for management, there’s no other way about it.

It is not “weak” to be one or the other, nor is either an “undesirable outcome”. If some part of us continues to believe an aspect is “weak” or “undesirable”, we ought to inspect any negative attitudes we hold against either and begin the work of untangling those impressions.
